Handshakes and Forgivenesses

Selected writings from my blog at Airgun Diaries

  1. Give or Take
Einstein's formula, E=mc 2 , says that energy (E) is equal to mass (m) multiplied by the speed of light (c), multiplied again by the speed of light (c). Within each atom is energy that can be released.

  2. Batteries Included
Each human eye initially transmits upside-down images to the brain, which in turn, rotates these images to the way that we understand and remember them. Everything we see is actually turned 180 degrees, all the time...

  3. Rebel's Commandments
If you live in a world full of desperation, do not despair.

  4. The Changeable
Palm Sunday celebrates the day that Jesus rode into Jerusalem on the back of a donkey, days before his last supper and crucifixion. As a form of honoring him, his disciples and others laid their cloaks on the ground before him. Those who had no cloaks laid palm fronds on the ground.

  5. Costly Interruptions
I wake up every morning knowing exactly what I need to do for that day. I go to bed every night knowing exactly what I'd forgotten to do for that day. Somewhere in between, I got greedy, arrogant, lazy, or all of the above and more.

  6. I Hunt the Android in Me
The Director's Cut of Blade Runner DVD came out last month, and I bought a copy recently. One of the documentaries in the DVD discusses the difference between Ridley Scott's definition versus Philip K. Dick's definition of an android/replicant.

  7. Call Me Ozymandias
In the movie Watchmen , the character Adrian Veidt, a retired superhero and the world's smartest man, has figured out a way to “save” the world from destroying itself through nuclear war. His convictions are so strong that he is willing to sacrifice dozens of lives, as well as half of New York City to do it.

  8. The Least
Yesterday was Good Friday. While driving, I noticed the car washes had more than their usual number of Friday cars. I then remembered that it would be Easter Sunday tomorrow, and maybe a lot of people were getting their cars ready to go to church.

  9. Validationorium
I haven't looked for it, but I bet that somewhere there's a “Short and Stocky Asian Geeks Who Think They Know Everything” club. I bet that that club will have a manifesto, and upon reading that manifesto, club members will feel really good about themselves. I bet that if I joined that club, I would feel really good about myself, even if I had reservations before.

  10. The Joke
There is a scene in the movie The Dark Knight where, in the middle of a fundraising party, Bruce Wayne goes outside by himself and tosses the champagne from his glass over the side of the building. Later in the same scene, the Joker crashes the party and also tosses the champagne before drinking from his own empty glass. It seems both men do not drink while at work.

  11. State of Grace
Every day, we deal with things—the alarm clock, the morning coffee, our clothes, our hair, the cellphone, the radio, what we ate for lunch. Most of the information on the Internet are about things, and I think most of the blogs have to do with things.

  12. Neither Here Nor There
In recent years, I've been trying to understand the Why of traveling. If it is simply to see one more place than what has already been seen, then one could just keep seeing place after place, and not really know why. It would be like gluttony.

  13. Ten-Minute Jolt
Take out envy, take out greed. Take out ten minutes of each day.

  14. iAssumptions
The new iPhone is coming out today, and I just watched the video tutorial on its features. Pretty amazing stuff. If I ever want to do something with a phone except use it as a phone, I would get the iPhone.

  15. The Satirists
The older I get, the more I realize how much I need satirists. There are enough people in my life to tell me when I'm being delusional, but it's always good to have backup.

  16. Reading The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying While Tending to a Sick Cat
I don't know why I was frantic earlier today. I don't know why I wanted traffic to go faster. I don't know why I wanted a car with a 250 horsepower engine. Why I wanted the construction noise two blocks away to stop. Why having two million dollars is better than one million dollars.

  17. Pushing the Orchard
At their best, my writings are apples that naturally fall out of a tree because it is their time to be ripe. If I am lucky, I will catch them as they are falling. I gather them with a small basket, lightly polish them, if at all, and bring them to the table.

  18. Setup
If I get enough sleep, I usually wake up with an empty mind. My bedroom is quiet, the sun is out behind the drawn shades, and over the next couple of minutes I recognize the different parts of the room. Everything in the room at that moment has equal importance.
